The National Pan-Hellenic Council Garden

The National Pan-Hellenic Council Garden is a physical tribute to the Divine Nine and their organizational history on campus. The area is an outdoor space where students and alumni who are members of the NPHC can gather, hold special events, take pride in their organization and celebrate their heritage. The space will also serve to unite and educate students about the history of these diverse chapters.

Location

The NPHC Garden is located on the North Lawn near Marston Science Library at the University of Florida.

History

The NPHC Garden was birthed out of the Black Student Affairs Task Force which suggested visual representation on campus for the National Pan-Hellenic Council like many other institutions across the country. Several student leaders within the NPHC have worked with architect firms, Student Activities and Involvement, and Sorority & Fraternity Affairs to develop the final design.

National Pan-Hellenic Council

On May 10, 1930, on the campus of Howard University, in Washington DC, the National Pan-Hellenic Council was formed as a permanent organization with the following charter members: Omega Psi Phi and Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternities, and Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta and Zeta Phi Beta Sororities. In 1931, Alpha Phi Alpha and Phi Beta Sigma Fraternities joined the Council. Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority joined in 1937 and Iota Phi Theta Fraternity completed the list of member organizations in 1997.

The stated purpose and mission of the organization in 1930 was “Unanimity of thought and action as far as possible in the conduct of Greek letter collegiate fraternities and sororities, and to consider problems of mutual interest to its member organizations.” Early in 1937, the organization was incorporated under the laws of the State of Illinois and became known as “The National Pan-Hellenic Council, Incorporated.”

The University of Florida’s chapter of National Pan-Hellenic Council was chartered on February 23, 1993.
